There’s blood in my mouth ’cause I’ve been biting my tongue all week – Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley

Growing up, discretion quickly became our family motto. Perhaps it was inevitable as my parents grew up in Las Vegas–and we all know about what happens in Vegas. Nevertheless, my sisters and I learned really quickly to keep the matters of our household out of the public sphere.

While I understand and respect my parents in their attempt to maintain privacy for our family, I think I might have taken the family motto a little too far–staying silent in instances where I should have spoken up.

In my twenties, I’ve worked really hard to live my life with greater authenticity. I’ve found that speaking up and speaking out about my experiences and the things that really matter to me is an integral part of this journey. As I find myself beginning a new chapter in my life, it’s become even more important to me that I find my voice and share my stories.

So, welcome to At Her Discretion. My blog. In all honesty, I’m not entirely sure what comes next for my little slice of the internet.

I don’t know if anyone will find my (mis)adventures as amusing as I do.

I don’t know if the people that know me will take offense to the things that I write.

I don’t even know if I’ll ever work up the courage to share the stories that inspired this site to begin with.

But, I want to try. And besides, anything I say or do here is at my discretion.
